Contents Claim Goal
The goal is to document each flood-damaged personal property item clearly enough for claim review. Photos are the anchor: each item should be photographed with floodwater damage visible whenever possible.
What Every Contents Item Should Include

| Room | The room or area where the item was located during the flood. |
| Brand / Manufacturer | Brand name or manufacturer, such as Sony, GE, Maytag, Whirlpool, etc. |
| Model # / Serial # | Required for electronics, tools, major appliances, and other higher-value mechanical/electronic items when available. |
| Item Description | Size, shape, color, physical appearance, features, and enough detail to identify like kind and quality. |
| Quantity Lost | Number of identical items damaged by flood. |
| Item Age | Approximate actual age in years/months. |
| Estimated Cost to Replace Today | Today’s replacement cost for a similar item of like kind and quality. |
| Replacement Cost Source | Retailer/merchant, online link, screenshot, receipt, estimate, or comparable replacement source. |
| Originally Purchased From | Where the item was originally purchased, if known. |
Photo Requirements
- Take many photos before removing or discarding contents.
- Show the floodwater damage on the item, not just the item sitting in a pile.
- Take overview photos by room before moving items.
- For expensive items, take close-ups of serial/model plates and visible flood damage.
- Keep photos saved even if they are not requested immediately.
Special Item Guidance
- Mechanical / electronic items: include make, model, serial number, age, and replacement cost support.
- Furniture: include fabric type, make/brand if known, age, and cleaning or replacement cost support.
- Clothing: group like items where reasonable, such as “3 pairs ladies’ sneakers, 2 years old, $79.99 each.”
- Bed linens: list sheet sets by size and list comforters separately.
- Large or expensive items: include receipt, online comparable, screenshot, link, estimate, or other support when possible.
Covered Location Reminder
In general, contents should be documented as flood-damaged while inside the insured building or a qualifying fully enclosed storage room, garage, or anchored shed. Items outside those areas may raise coverage issues and should be discussed with the adjuster.
