PFE Covered Building Items

Quick guide and download for covered building items below the lowest elevated floor of an elevated Post-FIRM building.

When This Applies

This guide applies to items of property located below the lowest elevated floor of an elevated Post-FIRM building in certain SFHA zones, and also helps compare those limits with basement restrictions.

Covered Building Items Summary

Coverage in these restricted areas is generally limited to specifically listed items installed in their functioning locations and, where necessary for operation, connected to a power source.

  • Central air conditioners
  • Cisterns and the water in them
  • Electrical junction and circuit breaker boxes
  • Electrical outlets and switches
  • Fuel tanks and fuel in them
  • Furnaces and hot water heaters
  • Heat pumps
  • Pumps, sump pumps, solar energy system pumps/tanks, well water tanks and pumps
  • Stairways/staircases attached to the building, not separated by elevated walkways
  • Water softeners, water filters, faucets installed as an integral part of the plumbing system
  • Required utility connections for listed items
  • Footings, foundations, posts, pilings, piers, foundation walls, and anchorage systems required to support the building
Basement-only note: Drywall and nonflammable insulation are specifically referenced in basement limitations. PFE enclosure treatment should be reviewed carefully under the applicable SFIP language and claim guidance.
