Plain-Language Guidance Added From Those Links

  • Flood definition: Flood generally requires a general and temporary condition of inundation over two or more acres or two or more properties, one of which is the insured property, from overflow, unusual/rapid accumulation or runoff, or mudflow.
  • After a flood: Insureds should act quickly, protect the property from further damage, photograph damaged food/contents/building areas, keep receipts, and document cleanup and repairs.
  • Contents documentation: Contents claims need photos, item descriptions, quantity, approximate age, manufacturer, cost information, and replacement support when available.
  • RAP/additional payment: Additional payment requests should be supported by a Proof of Loss and detailed contractor cost documentation, and may require the adjuster/insurer to revisit or verify newly claimed flood damage.
  • ICC: ICC depends on a community determination of substantial damage or repetitive damage and is separate from regular building damage payment.
  • Basements: Basement coverage is limited to specific listed items, cleanup, and limited contents if contents coverage applies.
  • Structural drying: FEMA W-13025A supports drying only when it relates to covered direct physical flood loss and requires careful documentation, especially when drying logs and professional mitigation charges are submitted.
