Foundation / Area Type Guide
Helps insureds identify whether the damaged area is slab-on-grade, basement, crawlspace, elevated, or mixed-level.
Why This Matters
- The type of area affected by floodwater can affect how damages are evaluated.
- Slab-on-grade, basement, crawlspace, and elevated areas may be subject to different claim considerations.
- If a property has multiple floor elevations or split-level construction, each affected area should be documented separately.
Common Area Types
- Slab-on-grade: living or finished space built directly on a concrete slab at or near exterior grade.
- Basement: an area with its floor below ground level on all sides.
- Crawlspace: an under-floor space that may be below grade, at grade, or part of an elevated foundation configuration.
- Elevated building/enclosure: space below the lowest elevated floor, often used for parking, access, or storage.
- Mixed-level or split-level: multiple elevations within the same building, such as garage/slab areas plus basement or raised living areas.
